LulzSec hacker Jeremy Hammond pleads guilty to Stratfor hack

Jeremy "anarchaos" Hammond, LulzSec member and self-styled activist, announced today that he's pleading guilty to one count of violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA).

Hammond admits that he worked with Anonymous to hack into the website of private intelligence company Stratfor as well as other sites involved in the law enforcement and intelligence sphere. He says he acted because he believes "people have a right to know what governments and corporations are doing behind closed doors." Some five million e-mails between the company and its clients were given to WikiLeaks, which has in turn published slightly more than 900,000 of them.

This attack was part of the "AntiSec" (Anti-Security) operation started by LulzSec in June 2011. That initiative saw numerous law enforcement and intelligence organizations attacked.

Hammond pled not guilty to the charges about one year ago. He says he changed his plea because the prosecutor "stacked the charges with inflated damage figures." These high damage figures mean that under current sentencing guidelines Hammond faced more than 30 years in prison if found guilty.

Further, with other indictments outstanding against him, Hammond says that even if he won one trial, further trials were likely to occur.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Hammond will be given immunity from further prosecution in federal courts. He still faces up to 10 years in prison for the charge he admitted to, as Hammond supporters argue that he should be sentenced to no more than time served. The LulzSec man already spent 15 months in prison awaiting trial. Sentencing is scheduled to take place on September 6. Hammond has also agreed to pay $250,000 in restitution.

Hammond broke into Statfor's systems in late 2011. After doing so, he got in touch with LulzSec ringleader Hector "Sabu" Monsegur to discuss the hack, using Monsegur's servers to store the data.

The e-mails were given to WikiLeaks. Other information—including e-mail addresses, hashed passwords, and around 30,000 credit card numbers—was published online. Subsequent to the hack, some $700,000 in unauthorized charges was made to the stolen cards.

What Hammond didn't know at the time was that Monsegur had been arrested earlier that year and was secretly working as an FBI informant. The offer of storage space for the purloined data came at the FBI's request. The FBI used information from Hammond's chats with Sabu, including mentions of previous arrests, to determine his identity.

Earlier in the month, four LulzSec members in the UK were sentenced to between 24 and 32 months for their parts in the group's hacking activities. Two group members in Ireland were arrested but subsequently released, with prosecutors there declining to press charges.

In this new campaign hackers have targeted a many companies and universities i.e Angola's National Diamond Corporation, Ornico Marketing, Moolmans Africa Mining Corporation, South African Express Petroleum, State University, Kenyan Business Directory, PostNet Internet Services and also PressOffice linked to BidOrBuy which is South Africa's largest online store.

Hacker release Mysql databases dumps of all these sites via pastebin notes. Hackers said, "Companies like Anglo American have decimated our vast natural resources and have paid our local workers next to nothing. In a result of that they have become angry leading to multiple strikes that have crippled our economy. But you must be thinking, strikes mining industries pah! A fast developing country like South Africa should be able to shake that off with all that 1st world investment they are getting! But corrupt politicians from both the ANC and the DA have put the country into a spiralling economic disaster!"

Team Ghostshell also declare that under a new operation #OpSAfrica with Anonymous Group they will fight against corruption and will make all knowledge free and help South Africa out of crime, corruption and poverty.

Anonymous Hackers Leak 1GB of Emails from Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Anonymous Hackers managing #opsyria have leaked  1 GB of documents that allegedly represent the contents of internal government emails from the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Most of the files are in Arabic.

HSBC Banking website Hit by Anonymous DDOS Attack

Major bank HSBC's websites are now all back online, following a denial-of-service (DoS) attack that left customers locked out of their account for nearly 10 hours.

People first began reporting problems accessing us.hsbc.co.uk, hsbc.co.uk and offshore.hsbc.com on Twitter on Thursday at around 5:45pm in the UK, saying they were unable to log in and use the services.
Others said they could not get to First Direct's website. First Direct, which does online and telephone banking only, is part of the HSBC group of companies.
On Friday, HSBC said its sites around the world were now back online.
"All HSBC websites have been available since 3am UK time. Thank you for your patience," the bank said in a post to its Twitter account on Friday morning.
According to the bank, its customers' personal details were not compromised in the attack, which disrupted online services but did not affect the other services such as the use of credit cards, debit cards or cash machines.
A hacker with apparent links to Anonymous has laid claim to the attack, and the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters group is also suspected of being behind it. The latter, which claims to be a Muslim activist group, made a now-removed post to Pastebin with a timetable of attacks on named financial institutions. Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Ally Financial are among a number of banks to have seen disruption to their sites in the past five weeks, according to reports.

#'OP Free Assange': Anonymous take down UK government websites

Several British governmental websites, including the Ministry of Justice, have been attacked by hacktivists in retaliation for Britain’s handling of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Under the campaign, which was branded “#OpFreeAssange,” Anonymous undertook a mission to take down justice.gov.uk and number10.gov.uk, the official site of the British Prime Minister’s Office. The websites are now operating normally once again.

Several Twitter accounts associated with the loose-knit Anonymous collective have acknowledged that the UK Ministry of Justice and the PM Office's websites had been targeted with a distributed denial-of-service, or DDoS, attack.

“#OpFreeAssange: TANGO DOWN! http://www.justice.gov.uk/ [500 Internal Server Error] [#Anonymous #WikiLeaks],” reads one tweet sent from the @Anon_Central Twitter account.

The hackers also claim to have taken down the website of another British government department – the Department of Work and Pensions. “Gov. of UK Expect Us!” reads a related tweet by Anonymous.

Assange, the founder and editor of whistleblower website WikiLeaks, has been ordered by Swedish authorities to be extradited from the UK where he had been under house arrest. Two women from Sweden have accused Assange of sex crimes, although he has yet to be charged.

In fear of being sent to Sweden and then extradited to the US to be tried for his role with WikiLeaks, Assange applied for political asylum in Ecuador, which the Latin American country finally granted him last week after two months of waiting. Regardless, British authorities have refused to give Assange safe passage out of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London so that he may travel overseas.

Before Ecuador President Rafael Correa approved the asylum bid, British authorities threatened to storm the embassy last week, prompting supporters of Assange and WikiLeaks to surround the building overnight in hopes of deterring any attempt by the UK to follow through with the extradition.

“If the UK did not throw away the Vienna conventions the other night, it is because the world was watching. And the world was watching because you were watching,” Assange told his supporters during his Sunday afternoon speech from London.

“So, the next time somebody tells you that it is pointless to defend those rights that we hold dear, remind them of your vigil in the dark before the Embassy of Ecuador."

In addition to lambasting the British for coming close to violating international law, Assange asked for US President Barack Obama to “do the right thing” and end his war on whistleblowing, saluting accused WikiLeaks contributor Private First Class Bradley Manning as a hero whose release from prison must be made immediately.
